Modern production, however, needs measurable and repeatable data. Color measurement instruments make communication clearer, help align devices, and reduce ambiguity between capture, proofing, and print.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, four main categories of instruments are used: densitometers, colorimeters, spectrocolorimeters, and spectrophotometers. Spectroradiometers are also used when the subject of measurement is a light source rather than a reflective sample.<\/p>\n<p>        <a id=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">Densitometers<\/h3>\n<p>A densitometer measures how much light is absorbed or reflected by a material. In print and photographic workflows, it has long been used to control film density, ink density, and tone behavior.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"article-figure\" id=\"s9\">\n<div class=\"article-figure__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Densitometer measurement principles\" src=\"https:\/\/perfectchroma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/instruments-for-color-measurement-image25.gif\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"article-figure__caption\">Diagram 9. Densitometer measurement by transmission and reflection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"article-block\">\n<p>A densitometer expresses results on a logarithmic scale and is invaluable for process control, but it does not describe color in a full colorimetric sense. It tells us about density, not about the complete appearance of a color.<\/p>\n<p>        <a id=\"3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">Colorimeters<\/h3>\n<p>        <a id=\"4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">General principles<\/h3>\n<p>A colorimeter is built to approximate the response of human vision through filtered sensors. Display colorimeters used for calibration and characterization.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"article-block\">\n<p>Colorimeters are particularly useful for monitor calibration and display profiling, where repeatable measurement of white point, luminance, and gamma behavior is essential.<\/p>\n<p>        <a id=\"5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">How a colorimeter works<\/h3>\n<p>A colorimeter typically combines a sensor, a filter set, and onboard processing. The device then computes tristimulus values from the measured reflectance data.<\/p>\n<p>        <a id=\"7\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">Spectrophotometers<\/h3>\n<p>        <a id=\"8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">General principles<\/h3>\n<p>A spectrophotometer measures reflected or transmitted light across wavelength intervals, usually throughout the visible spectrum. Because it captures spectral information rather than only filtered response, it can evaluate color with a much higher degree of flexibility and precision.<\/p>\n<p>This makes the spectrophotometer especially valuable when metamerism, illuminant changes, or detailed material characterization must be considered.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-block\">\n<figure class=\"article-figure\">\n<div class=\"article-figure__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Spectrophotometer example\" src=\"https:\/\/perfectchroma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/instruments-for-color-measurement-image30.gif\"><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-block\">\n        <a id=\"9\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">Observer angle: 2\u00b0 and 10\u00b0<\/h3>\n<p>Many instruments allow measurements based on either the 2\u00b0 or 10\u00b0 standard observer. These settings exist because the eye\u2019s color sensitivity changes depending on the field of view and the angular size of the observed area.<\/p>\n<p>At a reading distance of about 50 cm, a 2\u00b0 field corresponds to a much smaller viewed area than a 10\u00b0 field, so the choice matters when comparing results.<\/p>\n<p>        <a id=\"10\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">How a spectrophotometer works<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike a colorimeter, a spectrophotometer relies on a dispersive optical system such as diffraction gratings or interference filtering. That flexibility makes them central tools in profiling, proof verification, and substrate evaluation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-subheading\">Spectroradiometers<\/h3>\n<p>A spectroradiometer measures the spectral distribution of a light source directly.
